Enhance room designs with a DIY home chair rail installation

When designing a room, many homeowners are interested in creating accents that will make the room look even more attractive. One way of doing this that could be muted but still impressive is to add a chair rail. The process is quick and could be rather inexpensive, as well, according to DIY Network.

First, the project needs to be planned out. Make sure that if a homeowner plans to keep the existing trim on the wall that the chair rail is of the same design and color, DIY Network noted. For those who want it to act as more of a way to prevent wall damage from chairs, it could benefit to use the chair's height as a guide. But if chairs are not an issue in the room, or a homeowner is not worried about chair damage as a problem, it may be a smart idea to install the rail anywhere between 30 to 36 inches from the floor.

Also, it is important that the rail is level with the floor, DIY Network said. This can be made certain by using a laser level, instead of just a tape measure. Floors tend to lose leveling, especially in old homes, so by using a precision device, the chair rail will not look like it was installed poorly. Measure the length of each wall, and get molding that is longer than the wall. This is due to the 90-degree cuts that will be on each piece of molding, which can make the rails on converging walls seamlessly integrate.

When preparing to attach the molding for the rails, ensure that all wall studs are properly marked, according to DIY Network. If there is a need to make two pieces fit on a corner of the wall, then creating a 45 degree angle will make the chair rail look like it is flowing more than not. The alternative is a butt joint, which can look lazy and unattractive.

Finally, the chair rail can be attached with finishing nails in each of the studs in the wall, DIY Network added. Any gaps that develop can be fixed later on. After everything is complete, hit each nail to ensure it is embedded firmly into the wall. Sand the rails and then add some paint to make it stand out on the wall.
