Easy DIY chair re-upholstery
Many times, a homeowner may find a chair that has upholstery that has seen better days. However, if you are in this position, there is no need to get rid of your chair, as an easy DIY fix is available.
With the old upholstery on the chair, it is important to not damage the wood when starting to take it off. The best way you can do this is to carefully remove the staples - which may be easier with a staple remover - and take off the upholstery. The foam (or cotton) padding inside will also need to be removed and thrown away. The seat's center, which consists of woven material to sit someone comfortably, will likely need to be replaced.
Next comes replacing the webbed center, which will require artificial material. You will have to secure and weave it to ensure it will remain fastened correctly. Without weaving the material, it will not give the seat enough support.
Take the new foam and lay it over the seat next. It is best if you have extra foam and cut around it. This will allow for trial and error, and it will give the best fit. Spray the foam with a polyethylene spray, as this will help keep its shape.
After this is complete, it is time to cut and attach the upholstery. The size entirely depends on the dimensions of the chairs, but make sure that there is enough there to comfortably secure it to the chair. Keep in mind, like the foam, cutting a bigger piece and trimming it afterward is not a bad idea. Make sure that the area is as flat as possible when stapling the items. Staple each side slowly and one at a time. By doing this it will make sure the seat is snugly covered and will look and feel right. In addition, it will ensure the seat has the upholstery fastened correctly, which could make it last longer.
If the upholstery is not a solid color and has a design, it is important to make sure it looks right on the seat. This may mean not stretching it too much. However, once you have this step all set, the seat will be ready for reattachment to the chair and will work as good as new.
