Clearing out your bathroom before a remodel

When planning a bathroom remodeling project, it is important to not just run in there with a sledgehammer and start swinging. Some important precautions need to be taken care of in order to make sure a DIY demolition job is safe and clean.

It is important to remove anything that can be removed without demolition, as this will save a lot of time and energy in the long run. Before anything else, it is important to get rid of the mirror. Mirrors have a tendency to shatter and can be dangerous later on. By carefully removing it, the project will go much more smoothly and safely. The removal process depends on the mirror, but if it is stuck to the wall, use a tool to slowly pry it off evenly.

Removing the large items is the next task. Taking the sink and toilet out is not difficult, but take certain precautions. Turn off all water going to the bathroom area. After this, disconnect each item so that it is completely free from any piping. When everything is disconnected, ensure the item separated from any sealant and pull it up from its position. This should work for both the toilet and sink, and will open a significant amount of room in the bathroom.

After this, various piping will be exposed from the wall. These will need to be removed and each piece should be cleaned for both the drain and the toilet. If the items look broken, corroded or otherwise damaged, it could be smart to get rid of them and buy new items. It isn't worth it working for a short time before breaking. You will need to likely pay for a much bigger problem down the road.

After this, the water main need to be removed so any remaining pipes can be pushed into the wall. This will allow for the sink cabinet to be unscrewed and taken off of the floor and wall of the bathroom.

Finally, now that everything is out of the room, turn off the power in the area and take down the light fixture. Cover the ends of the wires with caps and the room will be ready for the sledgehammer.
