DIY home tips for kitchen remodeling

Remodeling a kitchen can be a laborious task. But it doesn't have to be, as long as it is well-planned out and the homeowner knows what they want. Having a kitchen that a homeowner can enjoy will make their lives much easier in the end, according to Danny Lipford, a home improvement expert in an article for NAPSI.

It is important to consider how the people in the home use the kitchen area. The best way to set up a kitchen that will hold a group of people preparing food is to create extra space for preparation, storing food, entertaining guests and cleanup. If the kitchen is tailored directly to the homeowner's needs, it will work out best. Another good plan is to add an island in the middle, as it makes for the easiest serving and seating space. In addition, it will allow everything to revolve around that area.

The more places to store items, the better off the kitchen and the homeowner will be, Lipford wrote. Storage options such as cabinetry with dividers and trays may work best. In addition, if an island is decided upon, make sure it has plenty of storage space in side of it, and this could make major cleanups easier, later on. A utility cabinet close to the door is a good plan, as this could ensure there is a place for keys and any other item that needs to be grabbed as someone is leaving in a hurry.

Another idea recommended by Lipford is to tailor the kitchen so that anyone and everyone in the home can use it efficiently. Having company over in the kitchen would need a specific space away from the other areas, Lipford said. With kids around, a lower countertop may be a smart idea, as it will make it easier for them to reach for items. Extra storage is always good when kids are around, as well. If a family wants to keep items away from children, it may be a good idea to build areas out of their reach.

Cooking items should all be together in the home, Lipford added. Spice racks built-in to the home are great ideas, and these types of things are great if cooking is common. Also, an area for cutlery, as well as other preparation utensils may be a good idea.
