Areas of the kitchen to focus on for home remodeling

Thinking about updating your kitchen? There are certain features of this living space which can be modernized with the latest trends, the Akron Beacon Journal states.

One aspect of kitchens which many new homeowners improve is the use of lines. Instead of using a classical, more fanciful approach to decorating your kitchen, using clean lines with little ornamentation can give your kitchen a more contemporary feel. Newer designs are trending toward a chic and sleek motif for the room - one that gives off an elegant, hotel-esque vibe.

While some homeowners may like having a traditional dining room table set apart from the kitchen, countertop extensions are becoming more popular, as they allow people to sit across from one another - unlike bar seating - while making more traditional kitchen tables replaceable.

Also, many homeowners have been focusing on safety in the kitchen. To make the area more secure, the ABJ suggests installing lockouts on stove burners to avoid accidentally turning on switches, and mechanisms on cabinet doors and drawers to stop them from slamming on someone's fingers.

To make the room more natural and energy-efficient, LED light bulbs, natural wood floors and stone stove tops can be added. If you decide to change the countertop, as well, quartz has become a preferred choice by many homeowners, according to the Beacon Journal.

When it comes to lighting, your personality can come through effectively and cheaply. Lighting designs such as hand-blown glass shades on pendant lights, drum shades and chandeliers all come in a variety of shapes, colors, patterns and sizes.

In order to allow for more space in kitchens, many refrigerator producers have made the appliance more economical in size. By choosing a smaller, more condensed fridge for your kitchen, you'll have more room to play with in regard to decorating.

An addition you may want to put in your kitchen with this extra space is a bar. Many homeowners find that having a bar in their kitchen - which can be used to store liquor, glassware, cutting boards and other kitchen-related items - keeps the room more organized. Instead of having to pack an already full fridge with beer and wine, a bar can provide an extra out-of-the-way space for beverages and utensils.

While you can check out more specific remodeling ideas at your local home improvement store or in some home magazines, the Beacon Journal states the kitchen should ultimately reflect your wants and, in turn, your personality, so this do-it-yourself project should aim to be as functional and aesthetically pleasing for you as possible.
