When planning a home remodeling project for a bathroom, it is important to think about function over anything else, according to DIY Network.

Depending on the allotted space, a homeowner may want to have an area for linens, as well as enough room to have the bathtub or shower along with a toilet and sink. If the person wants extra items, it is important to plan this out, DIY Network said. Shower seats, or possibly even a steam room, could be good additions, depending on what the person is looking for.

Colors are also very important, DIY Network wrote. Sometimes, it is best to stick with black and white if the area will be high-traffic and shown to guests. Other times, a more muted look may be the best color scheme to use. It is a good idea for the room to work with the home's surroundings, so if a family lives on the shore, beach items may be a good idea to use as accents around the bathroom.

Deciding between tile and marble can be difficult, DIY Network added. If the surface is rougher, it will be less slippery, but these items are also more likely to become dirty.
