Do-it-yourself projects for style and home savings

Many homeowners do not have the excess cash to make sweeping and costly renovations to their home. However, that does not mean that families cannot improve their living spaces with small do-it-yourself projects.

In the bathroom, a pedestal sink can go a long way to transforming a space. This is especially true when bathrooms are small, as counter sinks can take up value powder room real estate, according to Home and Garden Television.

After picking out a new sink, homeowners can turn water valves off and remove their old bathroom vanity. The new sink should be placed flush against the wall and mounted securely, according to the DIY Network.

Homeowners can use putty and plumbers' tape to properly secure fixtures and pipes. Once everything is installed, water can be rerouted to the sink and valves can be turned back on. The sink should then be filled with water and drained to check for leaks, according to the source.

To make the project more energy efficient, individuals could install a water aerator which helps decrease water usage, and subsequently lower utility bills, according to Eartheasy.
