To DIY or Not to DIY?

Almost always, the cheapest way to get something done is to do it yourself. However, being reasonable, the cheapest way is not always the best way.

Simple projects should be done on your own, assuming you are good with minor tools. Screwdrivers, hammers and levels can go a long way. Installing a door, door frame, fan and many other items and appliances as part of simple indoor home projects could take from a few minutes to a couple of hours to complete. These are the sweet spot of doing it yourself, and if you had a professional come and do it, they might be surprised you called them for something so simple.

However, some other major projects are best left to the professionals. If you have never taken part in a electrical project before, for instance, it may not be a good idea to attempt to do a rewiring project. Another idea that may best be left to the professionals is something large-scale, like installing a new floor, or replacing windows. Anything that is likely to last more than one day and needs significant experience and a large number of specialized tools may not be the easiest for the novice DIYer to undertake.

Also, anything outdoors that involves ladders or unsafe working conditions may be something that is better avoided by the average homeowner. Even something as theoretically simple as cleaning gutters can be dangerous if you are not confident in what you are doing. If you do insist on cleaning gutters, ensure that others are there with you - not only so that someone can foot the ladder, but also to make sure you are safe through the process, which can be difficult.

Homeowners who need to find a contractor for one of these tougher home projects can find top-notch professionals through HomeESP. It may be better to spend a little bit of money to hire a professional instead of risking damaging the home or, even worse, hurting yourself. By getting someone to do it for you, you can rest easy knowing it will be done right, and you can get back to doing whatever it is that you do best.
