Consumer Reports recently tested 30 different LED and CFL light bulbs to determine which ones offer consumers the best deals and the most energy savings.
The consumer guide's research indicates many issues facing earlier versions of the light bulbs have been resolved and that the newer bulb models last longer and use considerably less energy than traditional incandescents.
Of the 60-watt bulbs tested, Consumer Reports states CFLs save consumers money faster than LEDs, as they are currently priced lower than most LEDs on the market. However, LEDs may save consumers more in the long run.
"You can find a CFL or LED that will give you the brightness and light quality you like, and it will save you around $50 over the life of each CFL and anywhere from $65 to $400 over the lifetime of each LED," said Consumer Reports' deputy home and yard editor Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman. "Plus these new efficient bulbs last much longer than incandescent bulbs, so you won't have to change them as often."
Consumer Reports states the federal government will implement new regulations for these bulbs to make them even more efficient by 2014. Better-working bulbs could lead to further energy and home savings.
