Step-by-step tips to fix a broken faucet
Many homeowners can attest to the difficulties that come with owning a home and maintaining it properly and on a consistent basis. While no homeowner knows everything there is to know about how to keep their homes in perfect shape, This Old House has some advice to help you with one common issue that plagues millions of homeowners' kitchens - broken faucets.
Typically, TOH says this issue comes up due to faulty washers inside the faucets. To fix this problem, This Old House says to begin by turning off the water valve, stuffing a rag in the drain to avoid losing parts and taking the faucet handle apart.
Next, place the screw cover on top of the faucet, pull the handle and line up the parts on the counter in the order they were taken off. TOH says you should look for cracks, as they are a common cause for faulty washers.
Finally, buy a new washer and reassemble the sink parts in the reverse order in which they lie on the counter and your faucet should be as good as new.
