Top 5 plumbing tips for new homeowners

KPHO-TV states there are five things homeowners should know about plumbing so they can not only deal with problems which may arise, but avoid them as well.

Something new homeowners don't want to have to deal with after moving into a home is plumbing issues. KPHO-TV states there are five things homeowners should know about plumbing so they can not only deal with problems which may arise, but avoid them as well.

For starters, you should have your water heater inspected annually by a licensed plumber. Though your water feels hot may not necessarily mean the heater is safe or working properly. Sometimes, heaters don't heat at the right temperature, and can cause health issues, such as Legionnaires' disease. Also, be sure to test your tap water once a year. It's important to ensure no harmful chemicals or bacteria are in your water.

And if you see water puddles forming around the base of your toilet, check it for leaks. Going months without fixing this issue will likely rot your floor and cause substantial home damage, costing you money, so take care of the leak quickly and you'll produce some home savings. If other leaks start to flood your house, shut off the water main. Knowing where this is - and how to use it - is vital in case of an emergency.

While you may enjoy a powerful showerhead, using too much pressure can wear down your fixtures and plumbing. Every few months, test your water pressure to make sure it's at a moderate level. Between 60 and 80 PSI is suggested as the recommended pressure level.
