Producing home savings from your air conditioner

Before summer arrives, and you feel the urge to crank up the AC to its highest setting, the website WalletPop has some advice to help you keep cool while also saving some cash.

To make your home colder, you can begin by making it less warm. By closing shades and blinds, as well as turning off all heat-producing appliances in your home, you can eliminate a considerable amount of heat. Also, as incandescent light bulbs emit more heat than LEDs, you should make the switch. By doing this, you'll not only save extra money, but also create some energy savings.

Prior to installing your air conditioner, you should inspect the device for a number of things. For the do-it-yourself portion of AC inspection, you can clean or replace air filters to ensure cleanliness when operating the machine. However, if more serious problems exist, such as a worn-out filter or unsealed duct, find a contractor who can repair the unit.

Though it may be tempting to put the appliance on full blast to enjoy maximum cooling in your home, WalletPop recommends keeping the temperature setting on 5 degrees higher when you're asleep and at work. This can shave a considerable amount of money off your monthly bill.

And for days when it's warm out, but not hot enough to keep the AC on all day, use circulating and ceiling fans to cool down.
