Top trends in home remodeling

While many homeowners conduct unique home remodeling projects, there are certain trends which have become popular among a number of homeowners throughout the country this year. The Arizona Republic states these trending projects could work well for your home.

Making rooms bigger

It could be the kitchen, where you and your spouse enjoy cooking big family meals, or in the living room, where you and the kids like to watch TV at night. These two rooms are just a couple of many in your home you could expand to make them more useful and comfortable for you and your family, the Republic states.

A major project such as expanding a room, though, generally costs a considerable amount of money. Find a contractor before making any solid plans for a major undertaking such as this and ask them what it might cost to complete.

Removing carpets

No longer do many homeowners enjoy having wall-to-wall carpeting on their floors. Today, the newspaper states a number of homeowners are tearing out carpet to expose their floors' underlying hardwood or tile surface, or adding in those materials after removing the carpet. Hard surfaces tend to be easier to clean than carpet, the Republic states, as they typically collect less dust.

Knowing more about products

Though price and quality are usually the main factors regarding whether one will purchase a product for home use, the newspaper states more homeowners are starting to pay attention to other factors, such as how long materials will last and if they are environmentally friendly.

Looking ahead to the future

With the economy still picking itself up from the recession, the Republic says many homeowners have put off home remodeling projects they may have wanted to complete this year and instead saved them for a future period.

Major projects generally require some form of financing, the source says. Many lenders, unfortunately, have implemented stricter lending standards, which have made it harder for homeowners to borrow for home renovations, upgrades and additions.

The good news from this, though, is that homeowners can accrue savings for projects down the line, and may, in turn, be able to finance them completely on their own.
