More heat, less money: Home energy savings tips to keep residence warm
Many people want to save money and energy when it comes to their home, but you won't need to break the bank in order to do it. There are many DIY projects that can be done around the home that can be quite helpful in accomplishing these tasks, in order to save your wallet from getting emptied by heating oil costs.
One of the best ways to save on oil is to exchange the old thermostat with an option that is programmable. These tools can keep your heat at a low temperature when you are not home, and can conserve a significant amount of energy, just by keeping heat low when you don't really need it.
There's also possibly outdoor air sneaking in through the doors and windows as well. Check each window when it is shut. If you can feel air coming in, it has a leak. Going outside and caulking the window, or even using some other type of sealant could work wonders. It is really important to keep the cold air out, as it is letting the warm air leave. This is like letting money leave with it.
Also, check the doors. It is possible that the door is letting in cold air, especially if the home is old. The best fix for this is to add or replace the weatherstripping. The more heavy-duty it is, the better it will be for plugging the gaps that make it so drafty. Grabbing a sleeve for the bottom of the door can help too, as that area is typically difficult to keep from letting air in.
Finally, get an energy audit. This is when a professional comes over to the home and gives it a thorough inspection. It will tell you how much energy is being consumed, as well as ways you can stop from using so much. It may save a lot of money in the long run, so it could be worth checking out. While it is a possible DIY job, professionals have the proper tools to inspect the home properly, and they may have some extra pointers on how to better deal with the situation.
