How to supervise construction of your home

After helping a contractor come up with plans for your new home, Bob Vila states you should be there for the construction of the house at certain junctures to ensure your blueprint comes to fruition. There are three "P's" to keep in mind when watching a construction crew work on your home.

First, he says you should understand that the people putting your home together - construction workers, contractors, carpenters, plumbers and electricians - are all professionals. Be sure to give them the space they require to get the job done well. Interfering with their work will probably only hinder the progress being made.

Next, the you should maintain perspective about the goals of the project and think hard before you offer a suggestion or comment to workers helping to build your home. There is usually a chain of command, Vila says, at a construction site. Though you are paying for the work, you may want to let the professionals deal with the intricacies of the job instead of micro-managing.

Additionally, be patient with the work, as well as polite and pleasant. If there is something wrong that you want fixed, take the construction manager to the side and express your concerns privately as opposed to pointing out what you want in front of the entire construction crew.
