Building the home theater of your dreams

Many people dream of setting up a home theater system in their home, and it may be both easy and economical, according to HGTV.

The biggest issue when building the system is to put it in a place that will not disturb the rest of the home. If a homeowner can do this, they may be able to have a very good setup in their home, HGTV said. The family room or an unused bedroom could be smart options, but it is important that the area is around 20 feet by 13 feet.

If you have heavily renovated a room before, it is not much different when it comes to construction, according to HGTV. The main issue is insulation, as it will ensure that it is soundproof and you won't wake up family members when watching loud movies. For the floor, pack it with R30-rated insulation.

Many people prefer to have what is called a 7.1 surround sound system, and this option may be the best for the full home theater experience. Having two speakers on the side of the room, two in the back and three in the front where the television is are the best choices, HGTV said. There will need to be an area - typically a cabinet - for all of the audio and video equipment. Strong audio cables should be used for the wiring, as well.

Wiring the lighting and video projection are important in order to get the full experience, according to HGTV. Both an HDMI cable for high-definition video and a CAT5 wire for remote control accessibility are recommended. The back of the room will have the projector hanging from the ceiling, and the wires should be directed from there to the cabinet with the A/V equipment. Simple wiring practices can be used for putting lighting in, but a professional could help with this part if you are nervous about it.

Drywall can still be soundproofed, even if it is not particularly expensive, HGTV said. There are vinyl coverings available that can be applied, and these typically will help tremendously. In addition, adding the electronics and speakers should be a breeze. Lastly, use your best judgement on seating arrangements, as these could put the final accent on a job well done. After that, enjoy watching movies and TV shows in style.
