Avoiding home repair mistakes when revamping cabinets

Homeowners who want to improve the look of their kitchen by redoing their cabinets can do so in a number of ways. However, if the DIY project isn't done right, it could be a waste.

First, it's vital to make sure that all of the tools that will be needed for the project, as well as any other accessories, are in hand. This includes simple items such as a screwdriver, level, paint, finish, sandpaper and anything else that will be involved in the process. Also, having an area to put the items that is well-ventilated is a good idea, as well. Tarps should be used on all floors that involve paint or other items. Trust us, it will make clean up so much easier later on, not to mention prevent accidentally accenting your floor instead of the intended target - the wall.

Building the home theater of your dreams

Many people dream of setting up a home theater system in their home, and it may be both easy and economical, according to HGTV.

The biggest issue when building the system is to put it in a place that will not disturb the rest of the home. If a homeowner can do this, they may be able to have a very good setup in their home, HGTV said. The family room or an unused bedroom could be smart options, but it is important that the area is around 20 feet by 13 feet.

Home DIY repair for a rotted soffit vent

Soffit vents are important items to the home when it comes to ventilation and keeping the indoor temperature viable year-round. But these items can get damaged, and sometimes need to be replaced. While getting a professional can help, it may be a good plan to chalk it up to a DIY experience and get your hands a little dirty, according to This Old House.

A few items are needed for this project, including a crowbar, reciprocating saw, nailer, drill, clamp and tape measure. Also, before replacing a soffit vent, make sure there are no bees or hornets present, This Old House stated. If there is no sign of a nest, but there are insects flying around, it is important to get someone who can deal with such infestations to clean the area first. You'll thank yourself later when you don't have a bunch of stings to tend to.

Safe outlet replacement for DIYers

Homeowners don't have to call an electrician for every little fix needed around the house. So learning how to switch an old outlet for a new one can be quite useful, especially for those who want to save some cash by participating in a DIY project. Some simple steps from DIY Network show exactly what needs to be done when making the switch.

First, turn the power off to the outlet you are planning on switching out, as this will prevent any injury or accidents from occurring, according to DIY Network. If the circuit breaker isn't labeled, a smart way to figure out which switch is the correct one is to plug in a radio in the outlet in question. Trial and error will figure out which switch is for the power, and once it is off, put a piece of tape over it so that no one else turns it on in the meantime.

Quality DIY advice regarding fixes for cracked drywall

Many homes are equipped with drywall, and while it can be easy to paint, these items have a tendency to develop cracks. But according to paint manufacturing company Behr, there is a quick and relatively painless way to patch up these fractures, making the wall look as good as new.

All that is needed to fix the items is a painter's tool, sandpaper (preferably 100-grit and 220-grit), putty and a putty knife, Behr noted. After acquiring all of the necessary tools, make sure the crack is more than one-quarter inch wide. This may seem counterproductive, but it will actually get any debris, such as caulking and paint, from getting caught. It can be easily done with the painter's tool.
