HomeESP helps members cover the cost of leaving their homes and replacing spoiled food resulting from a blackout.
Most power outages are unplanned and it is virtually impossible to prevent a blackout or brownout; just ask your local utility. Whether it is a result of a blizzard, tornado, hurricane, ice storm or peak summer demand that crashes the power grid, power failures happen. Hundreds of thousands of people loose power for periods lasting from half a day to several days. The costs of a blackout can mount quickly. Although HomeESP cannot prevent power outages, we can help defray the costs of your emergency hotel stay or food spoilage resulting from the loss of power. For those times when a power outage goes from being a minor inconvenience to a family emergency, HomeESP provides a generous per diem payment for any failure of utility-supplied electricity delivery to your home lasting more than 12 hours.
HomeESP will pay $50 per 24-hour period, for up to three days per calendar year (a total of $150), for any loss of utility-supplied electricity to your home. The benefit begins 12 hours after the initial loss of power. You can use this money for any purpose, such as expenses you incur during a loss of power, including food, hotel, and transportation or shopping.
HomeESP Premier Members who want to make a claim should visit the FAQs for claim instructions.

The loss of power can be due to any natural cause or failure of the utility provider to maintain power supply to your residence. It does not cover loss of power from solar panels or wind generation on your property, construction at the residence or on your property, or other on-premises cause of failure, suspension of service by the utility due to administrative error or for non-payment of bills, or negligence, abuse or damage to power infrastructure by the HomeESP Member.
HomeESP makes it easy to claim the Blackout Protection benefit. A letter describing the power failure, when it started and when power was restored with a copy of the utility bill(s) corresponding with the dates of the blackout is all you need. HomeESP does the rest.
We encourage everyone to be prepared for brownouts or blackouts. Have flashlights, cell phone charged (or backup battery), portable radio and a supply of canned food and bottled water handy. However, for those times when an inconvenient loss of power turns into a blackout emergency, let HomeESP help cover your costs!
