Yes, You Can Replace Broken Patio Table Glass For Less Than New (about half the cost)

Patio furniture dealers routinely discourage homeowners from replacing the glass on their patio tables.  I found this out when my umbrella was left open in a wind storm and rose out of the umbrella stand and then fell over, breaking the glass on my 60 inch round outdoor dining table.

Most retailers we called said it wasn't possible to replace.  They offered a new table, for about $630 plus tax.  One local retailer, Town & County Patio Shoppe in Wilton, CT, offered great advice: call local glass companies for a replacement that should be half the cost of a new table - or less.

Bethel Glass measures replacement top for HomeESPWe called one of the referrals made by Town & Country, Bethel Glass, of Bethel, CT, and brought our table to them (saving a $150 round trip pickup and delivery charge).  It was easy to tie the table to our SUV roof rack, and a fun project to do with my older kid.  Note we reused old bubble wrap to protect the frame and roof rack.

Total cost: $265 for clear glass or $380 for the wavy kind, which we prefer.  We saved at least $250 by replacing the glass, were able to keep the table that matches our other furniture, and the table frame isn't in the dump.

Make sure the glass is tempered and also if you have an umbrella hole, it is most likely 2 inches  (you can measure the size of the hole by measuring the plastic grommet most tables have - measure the diameter taking into account the glass goes into the grommet - on clear ones you can see the actual size).  Also as you clean up, try to keep all the brackets that hold the glass in place for the replacement.

The moral of the story is, keep your umbrella closed when high winds are expected - or if you need to replace patio table glass tops, call the local glass companies and get the job done yourself for much less than new.
