Don't wait until winter to think about reducing your home energy and heating bill

Most people will wait until it is freezing in the heart of winter before they realize that there house is leaking and they are losing energy and heat... and paying a lot of money for the privilege.

Reduce your home energy and high fuel bills this winter by doing some prep work now on the house:

  • Seal your house and window leaks.  Walk around the house and you can feel the drafts.  The windows may have been opened during the summer but you need to shut them and caulk them if necessary.  If the leaks around the frame are really bad, you need to seal them properly.
  • Plug any wasteful duct leaks.  There are often many places around the house where you can loose heat.  Plug them up as best as you can.
  • If you can afford to, invest in a smart boiler so you can avoid waste and lower your heating bills.  Also if you become more aware, you can monitor and lower your hot water usage.
  • There are many new low consumption light bulbs out there these days.  It might be time to upgrade before the nights become longer.

We always recommend that you do a full home energy audit to identify all the areas where you are throwing money away because of the loss of energy.  In the meantime these few tips are a good start towards saving you money by making your house more energy efficient.

The easiest way to make your home more energy efficient is to seal any air leaks, and one that is often overlooked is the bathroom ventilation fan and exhaust vent. To address this issue, I use a replacement insert fan from the Larson Fan Company (online). Their fans has a true damper built in, that does a great job in keeping warm air in during the winter and hot, humid air out in the summer. It saves the most when air conditioning is being used.
