Rich from New York asks: "How does a backsplash stop water leaks?"
Rich,
A backsplash does not stop plumbing leaks. Backsplashes do, however, do two things for you. First, a backsplash protects the walls behind the kitchen or bath counter from getting damaged due to water and other liquids or food and grease splashing on them, as well as protect the cabinetry or floor behind the counter from deterioration and damage due to water splashing. Second, backsplashes act as a decorative element to enhance the area around the counter top. An ancillary benefit of backsplashes that are made of tile, glazed ceramic or other similarly textured material is that they are easy to clean, wiping down with little fuss.
If you have a pre-existing water leak, have it checked out before you refinish the kithcen or bathroom area in question and certainly wait to install a backsplash until you feel the water issue has been resolved and a bigger plumbing project behind the walls is not necessary.
And if you have more questions, don't hesitate to Ask The Contractor.
Thanks, Bruce
